december 14 2024 and good morning and today we are talking about federal taxes and provincial = state taxes and getting a break from paying them sometimes and we are talking about the country of canada
In Canada, GST is an acronym and it stands for goods and services tax and it is a federal tax and it is a 5% tax imposed by retailers shopkeepers on behalf of the government of canada and the canadian government receives this money after the shopkeepers collect it from the people that buy things, and people pay tax on goods and services at the cash register till on things that are purchased in Canada, and then the federal government gets it, except for certain items that are either “exempt” or “zero-rated” normally like the usual way things go.
In Canada, HST is an acronym and it stands for harmonized sales tax and it is a combined added together “consumption tax” in some provinces and when the HST is mentioned, this means that the federal goods and services tax GST and the provincial state sales tax that goes by the acronym PST and that is a tax imposed and paid in provinces like Ontario or New Brunswick, has been combined into a single number total tax rate like 5% + 8% = 13%.
There is a temporary GST/HST tax break (the GST part of the HST) on certain items from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025 in Canada. These some certain items goes like this: food, beverages, children’s clothing footwear diapers car seats, jigsaw puzzles, video games and consoles, hard copy books, print newspapers, and christmas trees
